Oscar Flores609609 Supporters - Install Traffic Lights and Crosswalk for Marshwood High SchoolMarshwood High School sits on a particularly busy stretch of Route 236 in South Berwick. During the past couple of years a number of new businesses have opened directly across from the high school, and just in the past year these businesses have become quite popular and are really increasing traffic flow in the area. This has taken what was already a dangerous intersection, and made it an extremely dangerous intersection. The section of 236 where the high school is located is particularly troubling. It is like a highway with a speed limit of 55, but of course many drivers are going faster than that. Currently, there is very little indication that this is a school zone. There is a small stretch of road directly in front of the high school that has blinking lights during school hours. By all accounts, these lights are generally ignored by the traffic speeding in both directions. This is a school zone for schools on both sides, with the high school on the southern side and a daycare across the street. During the past year, the bakery and gym on Punkintown Road have become popular with students. Groups of students now run across this busy throughway at all hours of the day and evening. It is truly equivalent to crossing a busy highway on foot. During school hours this section is meant to be 15 mph but few people adhere to that. Outside of school hours both the high school and the businesses across the street are very busy. Turning into rush hour traffic from either side is almost impossible. A new turning lane has also created a very unsafe scenario where a southbound car wanting to turn into the Punkintown businesses and a northbound car wanting to turn left into the high school come face to face and neither can see past the other to make their turn. The first to risk the turn risks a head-on with the oncoming traffic. Add to all of this that many of the drivers negotiating this crazy intersection are 15 and 16 years old… It is truly a dangerous situation. Here is what we believe would make this intersection safer: First, traffic lights with a green arrow for turning into the high school, and into the businesses across the street. Second, lighting this stretch of road at night. There is just as much traffic attending after school events in the dark as during the school day. Third, a crosswalk with a walk signal and blinking lights to alert oncoming traffic. Finally, a longer stretch of 236 designated as a school zone for the schools on both sides of Route 236. - Demand TxDOT Consider a Capped Freeway Design for I-10 in HoustonThe I-10 freeway in Houston, TX is already one of the widest freeways in the country. It was built right through the heart of existing neighborhoods that pre-dated the freeway by decades, and divides these neighborhoods to this day. Residents in these areas experience the negative impacts of this freeway in their daily lives: poor air quality, reduced neighborhood connectivity, persistent high noise levels, and numerous other impacts to quality of life. Now, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning to worsen these impacts with proposed projects that would further expand I-10, either by seizing additional property to widen the freeway or adding additional elevated lanes, over 50 ft in the air. These are the only two options that have been presented to the community by TxDOT, but we all know that other solutions are possible. TxDOT has an obligation to consider alternatives that could mitigate these harms. One such solution could be a capped freeway design for portions of I-10. This design would involve constructing a 'cap' or deck over the existing freeway lanes which can be utilized for a variety of purposes - for public space, park space, local businesses or even housing. The freeway is already below grade in many of these areas, making it a prime candidate for freeway caps.Capping freeways have been successful in other cities like Dallas and Seattle, where the caps have not only improved air quality but also revitalized communities by reconnecting divided neighborhoods (source: Project for Public Spaces). Furthermore, studies show that capped freeways can reduce noise pollution by up to 30% (source: Federal Highway Administration).It's time for TxDOT to show that it can develop freeway concepts that enhance communities rather than degrade them. - Demand Del Oro Water Company to Provide Clean Drinking Water Without Unfair Rate HikesMy family, along with several others in Pine Flat, CA, have been suffering for the past two years due to the inability to consume our tap water. The reason? Sediment, dirt, and menieral contamination. This issue has been ongoing since the before the Camp Fire in 2018 and despite our repeated pleas for help, Del Oro Water Company (DOWC) has failed to address this urgent concern until they received a citation from the State of California for failure to provide suitable potable water to their customers. DOWC is now under a Compliance Order from the State Water Board's Division of Drinking Water which mandates them to install a new water well/tank for providing clean water. However, instead of taking responsibility for their negligence and bearing these costs themselves, DOWC plans on passing this financial burden onto us - their customers. They propose increasing our readiness rate from $67.58 to an exorbitant $106.67 per month.This is not just about my family; it's about all families residing in Tulare County who rely on DOWC for their daily water needs. We are being forced into paying more money due to DOWC's failure at providing basic services that we are entitled to as customers.It is high time that DOWC takes full responsibility for its actions and provides us with clean drinking water without any unjust rate hikes. - Mandate Revocation of Driver's License Upon Dementia DiagnosisThe pain of losing a loved one is unimaginable, even more so when you know it could have and should have been prevented. My nephew and his mother were both tragically killed in a head-on collision with an elderly lady who was known to have early stages of dementia. Because there are essentially no laws in Alabama to regulate this disease she was allowed to continue driving regardless of her cognitive state. This woman ended up on the wrong side of the highway at night without lights when she collided with my family's car, causing immediate fatalities and leaving surviving members to grapple with lifelong trauma. This heartbreaking incident could have been avoided if there were stricter regulations in place concerning individuals diagnosed with dementia and their ability to drive. It is crucial that we implement laws requiring the revocation of driver's licenses once someone is diagnosed with dementia, and that family members or doctors are obligated to report such diagnoses to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s - a common cause for dementia - and this number is projected to rise nearly 14 million by 2050. As cognitive abilities continue to decline during this illness, it becomes increasingly dangerous for these individuals not just for themselves but also others on the road.Only 12% of states physicians are required to report individuals who are cognitively, or medically impaired to the DMV (California, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, and Pennsylvania). 50% of the remaining states (not including states listed above), encourage or allow physician reporting, but do not make it mandatory. (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming). 40% of states require a decreased time between license renewals once an individual has reached a specific age (a majority of which is age 65). 30% of states require the addition of a vision test in regard to reaching a certain age. 5% of states require an in person license renewal once an individual has reach a specific age. In Alabama it is only a recommendation that Doctors report dementia cases to the DMV it is not a requirement. While anyone can report dementia cases it is only taken into consideration by the DMV when it is recommended by a licensed professional. There not only needs to be better laws surrounding re-testing at a certain age, but dementia is not limited to a specific age group and therefore it should be mandatory that Doctors report these cases. We cannot afford further loss due to lackadaisical regulations around such critical issues. We must prioritize safety over convenience or discomfort about confronting difficult health issues like dementia. Please join us in urging lawmakers across our nation to enact legislation. - Highway 9: The Highway to HeavenMy little sister, Tiffany tragically lost her life on Highway 9 on August 4th, 2023. Tiffany was about 2 blocks from her home when she was hit head-on and killed. Highway 9 is ranked the second most dangerous highway across the nation with the most fatal crashes occurring in Cleveland County. Highway 9, or better known on social media as "die-way 9" is a stretch of road with more than 700 collisions since 2019 according to the Norman Police Department. It is a notorious spot for fatal accidents. The lack of a barrier in the middle of the highway poses a significant risk to motorists every day. A barrier could prevent head-on collisions and save numerous lives each year. It's not a matter of if someone dies again, it is a matter of when. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were over 600 fatal crashes on Oklahoma's highways in recent years, with many occurring due to lack of adequate safety measures such as median barriers. We cannot stand by while more lives are lost unnecessarily and prematurely. We call upon our local and state officials to prioritize public safety by implementing necessary changes, including installing a median barrier along Highway 9. Hercules and Savvys owner had to make the difficult decision to rehome her 2 dogs. She thought she had found the perfect family.. On February 19th she took Hercules and Savvy to their new home. A home with children to play with and a fenced in yard to run in. Kimberly Feltner Hobbs of Callaway FL only had Hercules and Savvy for 24 hours before locking them in their kennels and having them killed on February 20th. They were shot and then buried in their backyard near their childrens trampoline. The original owner contacted Kimberly to see how the 2 were adjusting in their new home and was told one of the dogs had bit a friends child and the cops removed the dog. Another person, who runs an animal rescue and fostered one of the dogs previously, reached out to Kimberly letting her know that if things didnt work out she would like to be next in line to get the dogs. She told this person a different story. She said they were rehomed to a military couple in another state. The owner contacted the Sheriffs office to get the report on what actually happened that day. The report says nothing of a child getting bit but that teenagers were actually harassing the dog. Kimberly had requested for Animal Control to pick BOTH Hercules and Savvy up. A short time later she called back to cancel that pick up. She canceled because they killed them. In the report however Kimberly Hobbs told them a neighbor took the dog. The owner went to their home for answers and this is where the truth comes to light. The children callously informed her that both dogs had been shot and buried in the backyard. They were even willing to show her the graves by their trampoline. There was never any proof Hercules bit anyone. The husband of Kimberly Feltner Hobbs told her to leave the property immediately so she did. She took their kennels with her and this is when she realized by the holes in the bottom that they had locked these poor dogs up in their kennels and callously murdered them. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office and Animal Control says nothing can be done to those that took the lives of Hercules and Savvy. These dogs need JUSTICE! Florida Statue 828.12 Cruelty to animals.—(1) A person who unnecessarily overloads, overdrives, torments, deprives of necessary sustenance or shelter, or unnecessarily mutilates, or kills any animal, or causes the same to be done, or carries in or upon any vehicle, or otherwise, any animal in a cruel or inhumane manner, commits animal cruelty, a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both.(2) A person who intentionally commits an act to any animal, or a person who owns or has the custody or control of any animal and fails to act, which results in the cruel death, or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering, or causes the same to be done, commits aggravated animal cruelty, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.(a) A person convicted of a violation of this subsection, where the finder of fact determines that the violation includes the knowing and intentional torture or torment of an animal that injures, mutilates, or kills the animal, shall be ordered to pay a minimum mandatory fine of $2,500 and undergo psychological counseling or complete an anger management treatment program.(b) A person convicted of a second or subsequent violation of this subsection shall be required to pay a minimum mandatory fine of $5,000 and serve a minimum mandatory period of incarceration of 6 months. In addition, the person shall be released only upon expiration of sentence, is not eligible for parole, control release, or any form of early release, and must serve 100 percent of the court-imposed sentence. Any plea of nolo contendere shall be considered a conviction for purposes of this subsection.(3) A person who commits multiple acts of animal cruelty or aggravated animal cruelty against an animal may be charged with a separate offense for each such act. A person who commits animal cruelty or aggravated animal cruelty against more than one animal may be charged with a separate offense for each animal such cruelty was committed upon. RELOCATE Bathroom OFF Frankfort BeachNote: In light of the Special City Council meeting held in Frankfort on February 29 and the apparent dismissal of any and all opposition to the plan to build a bathroom on Frankfort Beach, we will not pause this petition. We urge everyone to continue to put pressure on the Council members to CHANGE COURSE NOW and relocate the proposed bathroom OFF THE BEACH. Survey stakes are now in the sand as construction to build a new bathroom on Frankfort Beach is imminent. While the plan has been under discussion for several years, many people did not know about it and many objections are now being raised. Many more individuals would like to have a voice in choosing a bathroom location that won't impact the integrity of Frankfort Beach. If building construction goes forward without buy-in from the community at large (both full and part-time residents, as well as tourist visitors), the new structure could suffer a similar fate as the one in the 1980s that was demolished after 2 weeks. Given the approximately $400,000 price tag on this one, this would be a much more costly mistake. Even if this doesn't happen, the environmental impact of a permanent building will be irreversible! As excavation of the beach is set to begin in early March, there isn't much time before the decision is literally set in concrete. This means a PAUSE NOW--before it's too late! Victory!Take Israel to the International Court of JusticeNo country should enjoy impunity from the law regardless of their actions. The relentless bombardment of Gaza since 7th October has shown no regard for the lives of the civilian population who are seen as dispensable by the Israeli Government. In fact, contrary to International Law, Palestinians are again being collectively punished either by displacement, physical attack or both. Israel has now been given carte blanche for 75 years to oppress, evict and slaughter Palestinians. This is the inevitable consequence. The blood of 7000 children is on the hands of an International community who have turned a blind eye for too long. It is not sufficient for Western leaders to call for restraint whilst supplying the bombs that enable this genocide. Netanyahu and his ministers should face justice for their appalling crimes.
